SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A court in South Korea has fined Son Woong-jung, the father of English Premier League star Son Heung-min, 3 million won ($2,200) for violating the child protection law imposed on his football academy.

According to a local prosecutor’s office, the Chuncheon District Court informed prosecutors on Friday that it had issued such a ruling against Son Woong-jung, the director of the Son Football Academy in Chuncheon City.

The academy opened in 2021, with much of the estimated $15 million cost funded by Tottenham and South Korea star Son Heung-min.

Two coaches at the academy were also fined 3 million won each for the same violation, prosecutors said.

The parents of a young player said their son was hit with a corner flag and insulted by one of the two coaches.

Son Woong-jung denied wrongdoing but apologized and promised to review his coaching methods.
