Colchester’s first “immersive spooky event” to kick off Halloween next week

The city’s first immersive spooky experience, created by Colchester’s Castle Park Theater group and the city council, begins next week.

The city’s first-ever ‘Beware the Sacre’ will take place at Colchester Town Hall from next Friday, offering the community a ‘spooky’, immersive scare event.

The group, created by Castle Park Theater, has worked with Colchester Council to present an experience “designed to transport adventure seekers into the depths of the city’s dark past”.

Despite staging ghost story shows and its annual show at the Old Library between Christmas and New Year’s, this is the first Halloween event that Castle Park Theater has organized.

Artistic director Neil D’arcy Jones said: “It’s Colchester’s first immersive spooky event in the city center, using the spookiness of the building with our own unique approach to telling the stories of Colchester’s past.”

“We work with the Shakespeare in the Park council every summer so they like what we do and of course we are local and use professional creatives to do our work, so that was part of the attraction too.”

During “Beware the Scare,” visitors are led through maze-like corridors and abandoned rooms to explore parts of the building that have been closed to the public for years.

In these rooms, special effects and a team of actors from Castle Park Theater will “bring to life the darkest corners of Colchester’s history”.

Councilor Alison Jay said: “’Beware the Scare’ is unlike any other Halloween event the city has ever seen.”

“This is more than just a horrific event – it is a unique opportunity to experience history in a way that is both exciting and enlightening, providing a deeper insight into the city’s dark past.”

“Colchester is definitely the place to be for anyone looking for new and spooky ways to celebrate Halloween this October.”

The event is suitable for people aged 16 and over and takes place from October 25th to November 2nd.

“We don’t scare people on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday – even ghosts have to have days off,” Neil added.

“We hope this will be an annual event and will try to create a similar experience for young Halloween lovers.

“The town hall building is perfect for this and there are many more spaces to explore in the coming years.”

Tickets are available online and cost between £20 and £25.
