Watch a very chubby cat go on a massive weight loss diet

A fat Russian cat who isn’t the biggest fan of diets proves to be very relatable in her struggle to shed her extra pounds.

Kroshik, which means “little baby” or “crumb” in English, is anything but small, having received a little too much love in his old home. Although he’s still as cute as ever, his body is struggling to function under all the extra chub, which the Matroskin Shelter in Perm, Russia is trying to fix.

The giant orange cat weighed a whopping 38 pounds when the Matroskin Shelter took him in, a full 28 pounds heavier than the average weight of a domestic cat. A Maine Coon cat may weigh closer to 25 pounds, but Kroshik isn’t fooling anyone into thinking he’s just a “big boned” breed.

“Kroshik faces a long and arduous recovery.”

“He could be one of the five fattest cats in the world, but the only thing he wants is to learn to walk again,” reads a post shared by the shelter and translated from Russian.

Rescue workers said they couldn’t even conduct a full health assessment of Kroshik because his layers of fat prevented the ultrasound machine’s sensors from working.

Kroshik had a “long and arduous recovery,” the shelter said. Luckily, his volunteers have a plan.

Koshik is participating in a specially designed weight loss program with the goal of losing approximately 2.5 to 5.3 ounces per week. He lives in a rehabilitation center where he receives special diet food, medical supervision, hydrotherapy and treadmill walks.

Does he love diet and exercise? Well, it certainly doesn’t look like it, but let’s face it, no one looks like that. Despite Kroshik’s obvious disdain for the program, it’s working — he recently weighed 32 pounds.

Lost six pounds, only about 20 left, but if Kroschik can do it, anyone can.
