I tried the purple Addams Family Whopper from Burger King so you don’t have to. Here is my review

Halloween is fast approaching and so it’s not uncommon to see spooky and crazy things while you’re out and about, and if you stop by your local Burger King you’ll see something mysterious and spooky too.

A purple Whopper is on the menu. You read that correctly. A purple Whopper.

But is it all okay together?

Well, that was the question that needed to be answered when the fast food giant added this offering for the season, and if the opening didn’t give it away, this isn’t just a purple Whopper.

It’s Whopper on Wednesday, and it’s part of an “Addams Family”-themed rollout for the restaurant that began Oct. 10.

“Halloween holds a special place in our brand’s history and we know our guests look forward to seeing what delicious and crazy creations we come up with every year,” said Pat O’Toole, Burger’s Chief Marketing Officer King North America. “We know that The Addams Family also has an affinity for the scarier things in life, so this Halloween season we’re excited to bring fans not one, but four new versions of their favorite products with these Addams Family creations To be able to offer BK.”

That’s right, the purple Whopper isn’t the only new “Addams Family” item on the menu. BK has also added “Thing’s Rings,” which are just your basic onion ring offering, as well as Gomez’s Churro Fries and Morticia’s Kooky Chocolate Shake.

This order hit three of the four dishes – Wednesday’s Whopper, Thing’s Rings and Gomez’s Churro Fries.

The shake – BK says it contains “creamy soft serve ice cream mixed with chocolate cake fudge and topped with black and purple cookie pieces” sounds delicious, but it also seems a bit hard to try all four at once.

You can get the Wednesday Whopper meal with the rings and a drink for $9.99. You can order the churro fries for as little as $4.

Since the burger was the star, it was worth working from the bottom up to assess what was in the bag.

Here’s the quick breakdown of each item:

The thing’s rings

Not a huge onion ring person, but I can go for them every now and then, and given the theme – the marketing pitch is fun if you really like the season – I was more than willing to give it a try.

At least for me it was a mistake.

When I take onion rings, I usually take the whole onion slices, well breaded and fried until crispy. These were chopped onions formed into a ring and were not crispy at all.

They were mushy.

So I tossed them aside, but my wife, who loves onion rings, popped them in the microwave, dipped them in the spicy sauce and told me I was being silly.

They liked her. She is always right. I guess.

But trust me, if you’re looking for a good, crispy onion ring that can stand on its own, this isn’t it.

Try it, don’t forget the spicy sauce and decide for yourself.

Gomez’s Churro Fries

In hindsight, the churro fries were the absolute star of the show.

You can get them in small batches of four to twelve pieces, and they come with a chocolate dipping sauce.

The fries have a nice layer of cinnamon and sugar and look crispy. But when you bite into them, they have a bite and a flavor that just reminds you of something you might buy at a fair or carnival in the fall.

They didn’t need chocolate sauce, but if you like chocolate they were pretty good as a dip. A vanilla glaze dip would probably go really well with this.

These came cold. They are probably even more dangerous when heated.

Get them.

But it was probably smart to skip the shake this round, because few of them will spike your blood sugar.

Wednesday’s Whopper

When tackling a purple burger, the first thing you have to do is figure out how on earth they made this thing purple.

You want to make sure you don’t eat anything unusual, and to Burger King’s credit, the answer is prominently displayed on the menu there. The burger gets its color from purple potatoes and is topped with black sesame seeds.

So when we check that box, we know we’re not eating a crazy color, it’s going full speed ahead and… well, it’s a Whopper, and Burger King does it well.

Swiss cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, mayo, ketchup, cucumbers and onions, all fresh and in the right proportions. Added to this is the flair taste. It’s a pretty damn good burger.

In fact, among mega chains, it’s considered one of the best fast food burgers in the industry, regardless of bun color.

And to be clear, the color has nothing to do with the taste, but it might freak some people out, and if you’re an Addams Family fan or just enjoying the season, it’s a fun way to keep things up to turn heads.

Final verdict

Skip Thing’s Rings and get the fries, grab the burger, a drink and definitely get the churro fries for dessert and you’ve got yourself a winning Halloween combo courtesy of BK.
