What’s the story?

The family of a 44-year-old man from Odisha who died during treatment at a private hospital has alleged that doctors stole his organs.

Babula Digal was admitted to the private hospital in Cuttack with head injuries after he was hit by a pickup truck on October 13. He died three days later.

The allegations came to light when they saw surgical marks on Digal’s stomach even as he was being treated for head injuries.

Police exhume body for autopsy, hospital denies allegations

The Odisha Police has launched an investigation into these serious allegations. They exhumed Digal’s body from a burial site in Tikarabaju for a post-mortem.

Baliguda police station in-charge inspector Sushant Sahu said, “We are also probing the organ theft allegation against the son of the deceased.”

The private hospital in Cuttack has denied any wrongdoing.

Hospital director Susanta Behera claimed her doctors performed a decompressive craniectomy and informed the family about Digal’s condition during treatment.

Health Minister orders investigation, police visit hospital

Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling has also ordered a ministerial investigation into the allegations and promised strong action if anyone is found guilty.

He stated that strict action would be taken if anyone was found guilty in the matter.

Meanwhile, a team of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police visited the hospital for further investigation following the complaint in Kandhamal.
