Explosions in St. Petersburg on October 19, 2024, media reports of drone attack

Around 7 a.m., residents of the Russian city of St. Petersburg reported hearing explosions.

“On October 19, a drone was shot down in St. Petersburg. According to available information, the UAV was shot down by air defense forces. There are no dangers for the population,” says the media.

Residents also report that electricity was turned off in the Vyborgsky and Primorsky districts of St. Petersburg.

“The lights started flashing, the TV picture disappeared, then there were three explosions,” “something crashed and the power was turned off,” “there is a buzzing in the wasteland (where Shuvalavsky Prospect is supposed to go – editor’s note) wrote locals, some even claiming that paintings were falling off the walls.

Explosions were heard even in the dachas near the Orlovsky quarry.

Power engineers said there was allegedly a technical defect in the 110 kV system. According to Fontanka, almost three hundred buildings in St. Petersburg’s Primorsky district remained without electricity. The buildings have been without power for more than two hours.

The moment of the explosions in St. Petersburg was published online. The video was filmed by residents of a village in the Leningrad region. Local authorities remain silent about the attack.

Drone attacks on St. Petersburg

This is not the first drone attack on St. Petersburg. On the night of January 31, a drone attacked the site of the Nevsky oil refinery in St. Petersburg. The operation was carried out by the Defense Intelligence Agency of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

In March, the major port of St. Petersburg stopped handling nitrates due to drone attacks. After the attack, local authorities said that in the future they plan to move nitrate handling outside the city, presumably to Ust-Luga.
