According to police, a student gave birth to her child in her dorm, killed the newborn and fell asleep again

A young mother is facing charges after she gave birth on her college campus, killed the child and left the remains in a trash can, authorities said.

Brianna Moore, 19, was charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter of a child. Child neglect with serious bodily harm, failure to report death and unlawful storage of human remains Florida Authorities.

Moore was arrested Friday in Mississippi and is awaiting extradition to Hillsborough County, Florida.

On April 27, Moore’s roommates at the University of Tampa reported hearing a baby crying and finding blood in their room, according to WFLA.

Police arrived and spoke with Moore, who denied being pregnant and said the blood was from her menstruation, the WFLA report said.

The next day, the roommates found a bloody towel in Moore’s trash can and called the police again. When officers arrived, they found a dead little girl wrapped in a towel.

According to prosecutors, Moore said she gave birth in the bathroom of a residence hall WFLA. She held the baby close to her body until the child stopped crying. An autopsy revealed the child had multiple broken ribs and bleeding.

Moore also said that after the child stopped crying, she felt for a heartbeat and placed the newborn on a towel, thinking it had already died. They say she cleaned the baby with water and then fell asleep for an hour WFTS.

When she woke up, the child showed no signs of life, Moore said. Then she wrapped the child back in the towel, put the newborn in the trash can and went back to sleep.

“It breaks my heart to know that if this woman had informed authorities that she needed help, this little girl could still be alive today,” prosecutor Suzy Lopez said in a statement. “Instead, she took actions that directly resulted in the death of her newborn baby.”
