What you should know about Liam Payne’s tragic death at age 31

Fans around the world are mourning the sudden death of One Direction member Liam Payne.

Payne died on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was 31.

The musician was part of the boy band One Direction, which also included Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik. The group was formed by Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger after the boys separately auditioned for The X Factor.

After five chart-topping studio albums and four world tours, One Direction announced an indefinite hiatus in 2016 to pursue solo projects. Payne had embarked on his own journey, releasing a solo studio album, two extended plays and 14 singles before his death.

Authorities have released Liam’s preliminary autopsy results

Payne died on Wednesday “as a result of a fall he suffered from the balcony of the room on the third floor of the hotel in the Buenos Aires district of Palermo where he was staying,” according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office No. 16 of the National Criminal and Penitentiary Prosecutor’s Office under the direction of Marcelo Roma.

The autopsy report said Payne died of “polytrauma” and “internal and external bleeding.”

According to the report, the circumstances of his death are still being investigated as “doubtful,” although it appeared that Payne was alone when the fall occurred and that the musician was “experiencing some sort of outburst as a result of substance abuse.”

According to the autopsy report, forensic experts said they found 25 injuries “consistent with those caused by falls from heights.” They also found that “cranial brain lesions were sufficient to cause death, while internal and external hemorrhages in the skull, thorax, abdomen, and limbs contributed to the mechanism of death.”

Payne’s toxicology report has not been released at this time.

Frantic hotel employees called 911 before the fatal fall

Hotel staff called 911 minutes before Payne fell from the hotel balcony. According to a recording of the call obtained by Reuters, the “Teardrops” singer allegedly “destroyed the whole room” while drunk.

“We have a guest who is drunk from drugs and alcohol. And, well, he’s… when he’s conscious, he breaks, he destroys the whole room. And, well, we need you to send someone, please,” the emergency call from the CasaSur Palermo Hotel said.

“You need to send someone urgently because, well, I don’t know if the guest’s life is in danger. He has a room with a balcony. And, well, we’re a little afraid that he’s going to do something that will put him in distress, put his life in danger.”

Alberto Crescenti, head of the state’s emergency medical system, said on Argentine television Todo Noticias that Payne fell into a courtyard of the CasaSur Hotel in Palermo and refused to provide further information about the incident, the outlet reported.

Just days before his tragic death, Liam was reportedly kicked out of another hotel

In the days leading up to Payne’s death, the musician was said to have exhibited erratic behavior and was reportedly even kicked out of another hotel.

According to People magazine, multiple sources claimed that Payne was “kicked out” of the Palacio Duhau – Park Hyatt Buenos Aires. The One Direction star was asked to leave “because he was disturbing and disturbing the other guests and appeared drunk.”

Payne traveled to Argentina with his current girlfriend to support a One Direction bandmate

Two weeks before Payne’s sudden death, he traveled to Argentina with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy to see his One Direction colleague Niall Horan perform.

The couple was apparently only supposed to spend five days in Buenos Aires, but extended the trip. Cassidy had traveled home from the hotel balcony days before Payne’s fall.

The influencer shared with her TikTok followers that she decided to leave earlier than Payne because she felt the “need” to return to Florida.

“Honestly, I love South America, but I hate staying in one place for too long,” she said in a video shared days before Payne’s death.

On Friday, Cassidy asked for “space” on Instagram to cope with life without Payne.

“Thank you for all the kind words and love that I have received. I was completely at a loss,” she wrote. “Nothing felt real in the last few days. I ask and pray that you give me the grace and space to work through this privately.”

“Liam, my angel. You are everything,” she added. “I want you to know that I loved you unconditionally and completely. I will continue to love you for the rest of my life. I love you, Liam.”

One Direction breaks silence over Payne’s sudden death

A day after news of Payne’s death, the other members of One Direction released a joint statement.

“We are completely devastated by the news of Liam’s death,” one said Statement from the band said on social media. “As time goes on, and everyone is able, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved very much. The memories we shared with him will be forever.” Our thoughts are forever with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him. We’ll miss him terribly, Liam.

Each member also released a separate statement commemorating Payne.

Liam leaves behind a 7-year-old son

Payne left behind his seven-year-old son Bear, whom he shared with his ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole. Payne and Cole first met when the musician auditioned for The X Factor at the age of 14. Cole was a juror at the time. The two got back together in 2016 and began a romantic relationship. The former couple split after welcoming their son in 2017.
