Madill Art Club Hosts 63rd Annual “Art Exhibition at the Expo”

MADILL, Okla. (KXII) – The 63rd annual Madill Art Show kicked off Thursday with an open house where sponsors could purchase artwork to support the art club before the show.

“It is the oldest active arts club in the state of Oklahoma, and we are very interested in including our youth in our club and look forward to one day having them take charge like we do,” says Madill artist Linda Whalon Art Club said.

This year’s theme is “The Beatles” and features over 300 inspired works of art based on the band’s classic hits such as “The Yellow Submarine,” “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Here Comes the Sun.”

“When I sit down, it’s like any other performing art, the curtains open and it’s your turn,” Whalon explained.

Whalon says that with proceeds from the show, the Madill Art Club is able to give back to the next generation of artists.

“We can sponsor a scholarship for Madill High School and Kingston High School, one student per year, and they can use that fund for their art education and the continuation of the arts,” Whalon added.

Ashlin Morales, an art student from Kingston, has won first place in the exhibition two years in a row. She says the annual show helps her bring out her best creativity.

“I just love it and I’m happy that I can express myself the way I want,” Morales said.

Local Durant artist Phyllis Elrod says she used her experiences visiting Botswana and Egypt as inspiration for her pieces on display.

“You never know what you’re going to get, and there’s something magical about the work when you decide on a topic or your creativity and work toward it,” Elrod said.

The art exhibit runs all weekend at the Marshall County Expo Center.

You can stop by Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
