Man seriously injured in East Northport crash: police

EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. — Three people were injured, one seriously, in a collision in East Northport on Oct. 12, Suffolk police said. The family of the man seriously injured in the accident is raising questions about the nature of the collision, news outlets reported.

The family of 22-year-old James King told Newsday they learned of the accident after a Suffolk police officer knocked on their door. The The officer left an accident information exchange form Listing McGay’s father, police Det. John McGay as the driver, although the officer told the family that Ryan McGay was driving, Newsday first reported.

Suffolk police told Patch on Friday that a 2012 Mazda driven by Cheng Liu, 59, and a 2019 Honda driven by Ryan McGay, 17, crashed at the intersection of Elwood Road and Saratoga Avenue at 12:03 a.m

King, who was a passenger in the Mazda, was seriously injured and taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, police said. Liu and a 16-year-old girl in the Honda were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

A news release was not immediately issued by the department following the crash.

Liu was driving an Uber with King as a passenger at the time of the accident, PIX 11 reported.

Jonathan Manley, John McGay’s attorney, did not immediately respond to Patch’s request for comment Friday.

King suffered a severe brain injury, Newsday reported.

His sister said the family couldn’t get answers as to why the accident report named John McGay as the driver, even though they were told that Ryan McGay was driving and allegedly ran a stop sign before hitting the Uber, according to the PIX -Report.

The family does not know whether a breathalyzer test was conducted, PIX 11 reported.

King works as a security guard at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, his sister Amanda Smith told Newsday.

Witnesses told PIX 11 that a car “full of teenagers” hit the Uber, not a 57-year-old man.

Lindsey Veni, King’s cousin, told Huntington Now’s Pam Robinson that King was hospitalized after the crash, but his family couldn’t find him for hours until they located him at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. King went under an alias, which made him harder to track down, Veni told Huntington Now. She also told the outlet that police asked how much King had drunk even though he was a passenger.

Veni said King responded to family members’ voices and squeezed their hands on Wednesday, Huntington Now reported.

King was flown to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset on Wednesday so he could receive treatment from retina and eye specialists, Smith told Newsday.

No charges have been filed in the crash, according to Newsday.
