Man accused of child sexual abuse blames heavy drinking

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – A man accused of sexually abusing a child told police it was “possible” he did it while drunk.

Craighead County District Court Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause Friday, Oct. 18, to charge 32-year-old Kylann Carter Evins of Paragould with second-degree sexual assault.

On January 4, the victim’s mother reported that her child had told her about sexual assault several years ago.

The victim, interviewed by a Crimes Against Children investigator, said Evins came into her bedroom on several evenings while her mother was at work and touched her.

According to the affidavit, the victim said she was “scared and pretended to be asleep.”

“The mother also told me about a time when she and Evins drank a lot [child] sat on his lap and unbuttoned the buttons [the child’s] Pants,” Detective Adam Hampton explained.

The mother said when she confronted Evins, he stopped. The next day she broke up with Evins and moved out.

During an interview, Hampton said Evins remembered the pants incident.

“But he said that he used to drink a lot, and that he did so when he was drunk,” the affidavit says. “I then questioned Evins about whether he had touched the victim several times and he told me again that he used to drink heavily and could not rule out the possibility that he had touched the victim [the child] and said it was possible.”

Evins is currently free on $5,000 bail awaiting arraignment on November 14th. Fowler also ordered that he not have any contact with the victim.
