Man and woman arrested after police caught them with narcotics at Red Roof Inn, Middleburg Heights

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio – A wanted Newburgh Heights man, 32, and a wanted Ashtabula woman, 33, were arrested around noon on Oct. 14 after police found something in their hotel room at the Red Roof Inn, 17555 Bagley Road , which she assumed was narcotics.

A manager at Red Roof called police and said the man and woman, who were staying in a second-floor room, had left a small plastic bag containing suspected narcotics in a coffee bar in the hotel lobby.

Police went to the couple’s room and knocked on the door. The Newburgh Heights man responded and police handcuffed him.

The man became angry and yelled at the woman, who was also in the room, for leaving the drugs in the coffee bar. Police learned that Cleveland police were looking for the man for a felony.

Police entered the room and saw more suspected narcotics – a white, rock-like substance – on a counter. The woman falsely identified herself to police and handcuffed her.

Cleveland police arrived and took the man into custody.

Middleburg Heights police learned the woman was wanted in Mentor for drug possession and counterfeiting. Mentor police said they were driving to Middleburg Heights to pick her up.

As Middleburg Heights police drove the woman to jail, she lost consciousness. They administered a dose of Narcan, an antidote for heroin and opioid overdoses, and called paramedics.

After the woman was taken into an ambulance, she began vomiting. She was taken to a local hospital.

About half an hour after leaving the Red Roof Inn, police were called back to the hotel. Management had found what they believed to be a firearm in the room where the couple was staying.

Police determined the gun was not real. It was a carbon dioxide-powered pistol that could not fire ammunition.
