CREW Requests USPS Election Planning Records – CREW

Americans need to know that the infrastructure for absentee and absentee voting in the upcoming election is solid and that the USPS is addressing any outstanding issues in implementing these voting methods.

On September 11, 2024, a group of state associations, including the National Association of State Election Directors and the National Association of Secretaries of State, sent a letter to the USPS Postmaster General expressing concerns about the effectiveness of the Postal Service in the upcoming election expressed. The USPS Office of Inspector General also issued ten recommendations to the USPS, eight of which were implemented and two of which were appealed. According to the senders, the USPS has failed to initiate a concerted effort to resolve the issues raised.[d]despite repeated commitment[.]”

CREW requested records of all informational materials produced by USPS employees to implement the recommendations contained in the Inspector General Election Mail Readiness for the 2024 General Election Mail Readiness report. CREW also requested records of all communications related to a joint letter from the National Association of State Election Directors.

In 2022 approx 50% of all votes were cast by mail or absentee ballot, underscoring the importance of access to these voting methods. The USPS should respond to public concerns about its ability to effectively carry out its duties to increase confidence ahead of the 2024 elections.
