The “God Of War” show on Amazon doesn’t seem to be doing well

While Amazon is content to pour enormous amounts of money into projects, one high-profile megashow appears to be in trouble. After a hugely successful adaptation of the Fallout game series, Amazon tried to do something similar with God of War, the famous Sony Santa Monica games.

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios are now essentially starting over. Major existing parties have left the project, including showrunner and EP Rafe Judkins (also the Wheel of Time showrunner) and fellow executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus are gone.

This came after several scripts had been written for the season, some of which had even been praised in the past, but now “they are moving in a different creative direction,” the report said. All new writers, a new showrunner and of course at some point assembling a cast that hadn’t manifested itself before.

This project is more like The Last of Us than Fallout, with HBO’s series being a pure adaptation of the games while Amazon’s Fallout is just set in the same universe with entirely new characters. Of course, this isn’t possible with Kratos. And this series is said to be based on the recent Norse games, not the ancient Greek games, which raises the question of how this could be handled, as knowing the entire story is very important to create the bigger moments of these new games Country.

It’s unclear whether a “different creative direction” would be closer to the games’ content or further away. Obviously fans would prefer to see it reflect the (excellent) games, but there is a group that thinks this project probably shouldn’t happen at all. A key barrier to entry here is who exactly will play an acceptable version of Kratos. His voice actor/actor Christopher Judge seems adamant that he wants the role, even though he doesn’t bear much resemblance to the hulking godslayer. I find it very difficult to imagine who else could take on this role. People like Dave Bautista or Jason Momoa come to mind, but I have no idea if they would work either.

Either way, there’s still a long way to go before they’re essentially back to square one, and it’s not impossible for it to completely implode and just not happen, similar to what happened with the Netflix series Horizon Zero Dawn “ seems to be the case. Sometimes these things don’t just work.
