Worcester man charged with assault in child’s death: reports

WORCESTER, MA – A man is charged in the death of his 4-year-old daughter, according to WCVB 5-ABC.

Police responded to an apartment on Sever Street for a report of a child who had fallen to the floor and was unresponsive.

According to WHDH 7-News, 34-year-old Francisco Ortiz told police his daughter fell off the kitchen table.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the child, but he was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

An autopsy found the child’s head and facial injuries were consistent with a “fall from two stories, rather than a fall from a table,” WCVB 5-ABC reported.

According to WHDH 7 News, hospital staff discovered that the child had multiple bruises on various parts of her body, which Ortiz said were reportedly the result of the girl falling off the table multiple times.

Ortiz was charged with assault and battery on a child causing significant injury, domestic assault and battery and reckless endangerment of a child.

He was held without bail and will be back in court next week for a risk hearing.
