Man arrested for driving his vehicle into a group waiting for a ride, killing one

One person died and several were injured after a vehicle plowed into a group of people who appeared to be waiting for a ride downtown late Thursday night, according to police.

Entertainment District officers responded to an accident at 4th Avenue North and Commerce Street around 11:45 p.m.

Police checked security cameras and located a maroon Mercedes with Tennessee plates registered to 25-year-old John Williams.

They say the video shows the vehicle appearing to veer off the road and onto bike paths and the sidewalk before crashing into a group of pedestrians.

The police affidavit said Williams had red, bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol.

The affidavit also states that police interviewed the passengers in Williams’ vehicle and none of them could explain what happened, saying they were “on the phone.”

According to police, one victim struck by the vehicle died and three others were taken to the hospital.

A person who was in Williams’ vehicle was also transported to the hospital.

Williams was booked into the Davison County Jail and his bond is set at $105,000.
