David Tennant’s latest drama Rivals received numerous positive reviews ahead of its release, with critics describing it as a “hedonistic riot”. The eight-part series, based on the novel by Dame Jilly Cooper, is said to combine “romantic entanglements, underhanded deals, sex and humor”.

According to the official synopsis, Rivals delves into the cutthroat world of independent television in 1986, set against the dramatic, excessive and scandalous antics of England’s power-hungry social elite. Deals are made in boardrooms and bedrooms alike, but no one knows who will emerge victorious in this environment where everyone is fighting against themselves.

All episodes of Rivals are available to stream on Disney+. Membership starts at £4.99 per month for the standard plan with advertising. By pre-paying for a year on the Standard or Premium plan, members can save up to £25.98 and get the equivalent of 12 months for the price of 10.

The standard plan now costs £89.90, while the premium plan costs £129.90 and offers higher video quality up to 4K UHD and HDR, as well as the ability to stream on four devices simultaneously. A Disney+ membership provides access to popular shows and films such as Only Murders in the Building, The Bear and Planet of the Apes, as well as numerous titles from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises.

Rivals features a star-studded cast including former Doctor Who Tennant, The Boys’ Alex Hassell and Poldark’s Aidan Turner. Bella Maclean, Emily Atack and Danny Dyer also star in the show alongside Katherine Parkinson, Nafessa Williams and Victoria Smurfit, reports The Mirror.

The series received a number of positive reviews prior to release and currently boasts a 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating. The Guardian praised the series as a “perfect mix of Carry On and Eurotrash”, while The Telegraph gave it a glowing five-star review, describing it as a “delightfully un-PC game” that was “not inspired by Disney in the least.” “. .

Empire praised Rivals as a “hedonistic riot” that was “explosive in more ways than one”, making for “infinitely entertaining” viewing. Elsewhere, Radio Times said the drama was “glamorous, lively and carefree” but also “terribly soapy in all the right places”.

Tennant received particular praise for his performance, with the release noting his “eerie darkness”. It said: “Special praise goes to Tennant, who really manages to be the Rivals villain, exuding the spooky darkness he has demonstrated so well in series like Deadwater Fell, Inside Man and Des.”
