Washtenaw County officials are reassuring voters that ballots will be counted accurately and election security will be strong

Washtenaw County officials say election security is strong and there is no reason to suspect possible fraud across the state.

As the use of mail-in voting has increased, concerns have been raised about securing ballots and ensuring the accuracy of vote totals.

Rena Basch, Washtenaw County elections director, says one of the reasons Michigan elections are secure is the newspaper.

“We have paper ballots, we have paper applications, there is a paper trail, we have paper tapes for election results at the end of the night. So paper can’t be hacked, and if your technology fails, you have your backup.”

Basch says that the counting process also involves many people at different levels comparing each other’s numbers. She says the technology does the same thing at every level to ensure accurate vote counts.
