El Paso teen arrested for alleged involvement in Upper Valley shooting

El Paso police have arrested a teenager they believe is responsible for a shooting in the Upper Valley that sent another teenager to the hospital in early October.

Police arrested 17-year-old Josue Meraz on Oct. 8 for his alleged involvement in a shooting that occurred two days earlier, sending the 17-year-old victim to the hospital with gunshot wounds.

According to El Paso police, the victim of the shooting in Thorn Park, near Doniphan Drive and Sandoval Apartments, traveled nearly two miles to a Verizon Center at 7661 N. Mesa St. nearby on Oct. 6 I-10 and Walmart to call for help.

After an investigation, police said they concluded Meraz was involved, which led to officers arresting him along with another man on Oct. 8 outside the Sandoval Apartments, where the two were in a car with a handgun hanging around.

Meraz is charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon and aggravated assault and his total bond was set at $100,000.

Police documents indicate that this is not Meraz’s first run-in with local laws.

On Sept. 24, Meraz was arrested along with another suspect after police said they found 20 grams of cocaine in small plastic bags and a handgun during a traffic stop in west El Paso.
