A blow to the knee while wicketkeeping forced Rishabh Pant from the field in the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru on Thursday, and India’s injury worries grew when Yashasvi Jaiswal injured his thumb while taking a sharp close-range catch on Friday.
On the third day of the match, while standing at the gully while Mohammed Siraj was bowling, Jaiswal fended off an edge from Daryll Mitchell’s bat that flew towards the Indian opener. He immediately grimaced and shook hands before being escorted off the field for medical treatment.
Axar Patel came in to replace Jaiswal. However, Jaiswal later returned to the field with his left thumb heavily wrapped, which calmed India’s nerves.

Earlier, before the start of play on Friday, BCCI announced that Pant will stay away from the field to avoid the risk of aggravation of his injury, which is in the same knee that underwent surgery following his car accident in December 2022.
Dhruv Jurel will continue to keep wickets.
After stumps on Thursday, Rohit had said: “The ball went straight to his kneecap, the leg on which he underwent surgery. So he has a little swelling on it. The muscles are a little tender at this time.” It is a precautionary measure.
The BCCI update on Pant’s injury said: “The medical team is monitoring his progress.”
New Zealand’s lead rose past the 300-run mark on Friday thanks to a century from Rachin Ravindra and a brisk five from Tim Southee (65).
India were sent off on the second day with an embarrassing 46 points, their lowest score in a Test on home soil.
