Nebraska vs. Indiana Prediction, Picks and Odds – College Football Week 8

Despite having one of the best offenses in college football, Ed Scimia believes Indiana’s defense will be the difference here against an inconsistent Cornhuskers team.

The Indiana Hoosiers will put their undefeated record on the line this Saturday when they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a Big Ten Conference matchup at Memorial Stadium.

I expect both defenses to come up big in this game, which is why I’m targeting the minors in my Nebraska vs. Indiana predictions this weekend.

Read on to find out why I’m predicting a low-scoring game in my free college football picks for Saturday, October 19th.

My analysis
The Indiana Hoosiers have absolutely tested their schedule so far this season. The Hoosiers are already bowl eligible at 6-0 and have won every game by at least two touchdowns. They have scored more than 41 points in five of those games and rank third nationally in offensive rating.

Does this mean Indiana is a juggernaut heading into the College Football Playoff? Probably not. The Hoosiers played a pretty weak game plan and didn’t really encounter much resistance. Their toughest test yet was against the Maryland Terrapins and that game ended in a 42-28 win for Indiana.

That will change on Saturday when the Hoosiers welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers to town. The Cornhuskers are a 5-1 team that is one of the best defensive teams in the country, allowing opponents just 11.3 points per game. That number might be lower if it weren’t for a terribly disappointing performance against the Illinois Fighting Illini, who stunned Nebraska with a 31-24 upset. Outside of this game, no one has scored more than 10 points against the Cornhuskers.

Nebraska allowed just 4.4 yards per play, and while it proved particularly strong against the running game, it also limited opposing passers to just 6.0 yards per attempt. And while it didn’t have a particularly difficult schedule either, it faced tougher competition than Indiana. For example, the Cornhuskers held the talented Colorado Buffaloes’ offense to just 10 points, limiting Colorado to just 260 yards of total offense.

I’m not saying Nebraska can completely shut out Indiana, but this will be a far better defense than anything the Hoosiers have played so far this year. Luckily, the Hoosiers can play more than enough defense to give themselves a good chance of a home win.

While we focused on offense, Indiana’s defense was also outstanding, holding opponents to just 14.8 ppg. While the Hoosiers aren’t as formidable defensively as Nebraska, they don’t need to be, as the Cornhuskers have only averaged 28.0 ppg and will likely struggle to move the ball against an Indiana defense that’s ranked nationally seventh in total yardage is defense, allowing just 255.7 yards per game.

Neither team should be particularly explosive in this game, meaning it will look more like a typical Nebraska game than an Indiana shootout this season. I’ll take the under.

Nebraska vs. Indiana, Match Game Parlay (SGP)

While I think both defenses will have their strengths on Saturday, the Hoosiers have a better chance to break through and score thanks to an offense that is averaging an impressive 47.5 points per game. Senior quarterback Kurtis Rourke has been one of the best quarterbacks in the country this year and should be able to lead Indiana to another win this weekend.

So I combine the under with a bet on Indiana to cover the spread. The Hoosiers should be up by about a touchdown in this game, but we can get on the better side of this line. As long as you can give away less than seven points, I would pair the Hoosiers with the Under for a solid SGP.
