Day of the Dead Events in Southern California – NBC Los Angeles

Southern California is preparing to celebrate an ancient Mexican tradition that honors and celebrates loved ones who have left this earth.

Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, but events to kick off the colorful cultural event are planned for October.

The celebration usually honors the life of the deceased with colorful offerings and altars, which may include photographs, favorite foods, candles, flowers, especially the bright orange cempasúchil, confetti and sugar skulls, as well as bread and items that once belonged to the person.

On the first Day of the Dead, also known as All Saints’ Day, deceased children and infants are honored. This day is also known as “Day of the Innocents”.

On November 2nd, All Souls Day, all adults are honored.
