MNPD’s Family Intervention Program is offering “critical incident debriefings” for those present at the Jefferson St. mass shooting

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) Family Intervention Program counselors are now offering “Critical Incident Debriefings” for those who were present at the mass shooting on Jefferson Street.

One person was killed and nine others were injured in the shooting over the weekend.

MNPD said traumatic incidents can affect people in different ways and can cause different reactions.

These reactions include:

PHYSICAL REACTIONS

  • Pain such as headaches, back pain, stomach pain
  • Changes in sleep patterns and appetite
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • Easily startled by noises or unexpected touches
  • More susceptible to colds and illnesses
  • Increased consumption of alcohol or drugs and/or overeating

EMOTIONAL REACTIONS

  • Shock and disbelief
  • Anxiety and/or fear
  • Grief, disorientation, denial
  • Hyper-vigilance or hypervigilance
  • Irritability, restlessness, outbursts of anger or anger
  • Emotional fluctuations – like crying and then laughing
  • Worrying or ruminating – intrusive thoughts about the trauma
  • Nightmares
  • Flashbacks
  • Feelings of helplessness, panic

“Anyone in the community who was on or near Jefferson Street last Saturday evening and would like to participate in a debriefing is asked to contact counselors by email at [email protected] or by phone at 615-862-7773 of the Family Intervention Program. ” MNPD said.
