Ducks are CFP contenders

The Oregon Ducks are undoubtedly one of the best teams in the country. Dan Lanning’s team held serve at home against one of the favorites in the College Football National Championship. Now they face a Purdue team that has yet to win an FBS this season.

Oregon’s offense scored 36.6 points per game with an elite 6.9 yards per game (13th in the country). They averaged a massive 9.1 yards per pass (14th) while completing a national-high 73.42% of passes and converting over 49% of third-down attempts.

Dillon Gabriel has thrown for 1,790 yards with 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions. The veteran signal caller has the ability to set up a brutal Purdue defense on Friday night.

The Ducks could be even better on defense. Lanning’s skills as a defensive mastermind have come through. Oregon ranks in the top 35 in points per game, yards per game, yards per play, yards per pass and third-down conversion percentage allowed. They also rank 19th in sacks with 17 quarterback takedowns in six games. If Purdue’s passing attack doesn’t get going, it’s going to be a long night for the Boilermakers.

Additionally, the Ducks have a record of 5-1 SU in their last six road games.

Purdue is a mess

As mentioned, the Purdue Boilermakers have only had one win this season, and that was against FCS Indiana State. Since that win in Week 0, they have been run off the field by Notre Dame (66-7) and Wisconsin (52-6) and beaten by Oregon State and Nebraska.

Then Ryan Walters decided to start freshman quarterback Ryan Browne against Illinois, and the Boilermakers went blow for blow with the Illini. They nearly got the win against an Illinois team that beat Nebraska and rivaled Penn State this season. An Illini field goal late in regulation and a failed two-point play in overtime tied the game. Now Purdue gets a chance to play giant killer in Week 8.

Unfortunately for the Boilermakers, that chance comes against one of the best teams in the country. With the talent and depth to win a football game in many ways. Purdue’s numbers pale in comparison to the mighty Ducks. Purdue has some of the worst stats in the FBS with 46.8 points per game (131st), 514.6 yards per game (130th) and 7.1 yards per game (129th).

On the other side of the football, the Boilermakers have scored just 18.6 points per game (109th) and converted just 28% of third-down attempts (126th). However, most of these numbers come from Hudson Card and not Browne under center. There are few paths to victory for this overmatched Purdue team.

Oregon vs Purdue Prediction

Ultimately, the Ducks won’t have much against Browne. This is great news for bettors, as the unpredictability of the Boilermakers’ passing attack will likely lead to a few more points on the scoreboard. Oregon will overtake the Boilermakers, but the question is by how much?

Expect the Ducks to take their foot off the gas sooner than expected in this game. Lanning will want to give his charges some rest after the emotional and physical toll of a top-five matchup against the tough Buckeyes. This is why I like the idea of buying the Boilermakers half a point to +28.
