Man injured in police shooting in Saratoga Springs

SARATOGA SPRINGS – A man is injured and in custody after being involved in a police shooting Thursday afternoon in Saratoga Springs.

Around 3:15 p.m., officers attempted to stop a black Mercedes south of Harvest Hills Boulevard. Saratoga Springs Police Chief Andy Burton said the suspect was uncooperative and gave police false information.

Officers learned the man had previously been involved in serious crimes and was considered armed and dangerous, Burton said.

Two officers tried to get the man to get out of the car and shots were fired. Police did not specify who fired the shots.

Police said the man fled in his vehicle, then got out and ran into a neighborhood. The police arrested the man and took him into custody. The man was taken to a hospital for an unspecified injury, police said.

There are significant traffic delays due to road closures in the area, police said on social media.

Lori Sanderson was doing construction work at her mother’s apartment in the neighborhood the man was walking through and said a stranger started banging on the door Thursday afternoon.

“I came and answered and this man pushed me in and just said, ‘I need help! I need help!’” Sanderson said. “And he turned around and he had a bullet hole in his back.”

Sanderson said she repeatedly tried to push the man out.

Police did not release any information about the man’s injury, but Sanderson believes it was the same man who came into the apartment. She said she was thankful no one else was hurt.

“It’s just scary. If he had had a gun or I hadn’t been here… who knows what could have happened,” she said.
