NEW YORK — A man says he was beaten with his own baseball bat on a subway in SoHo early Monday morning.

The victim told CBS News New York’s Alecia Reid the attack came out of nowhere and police are still searching for the suspect.

“My jacket was full of blood”

Jarrett Adorno, 25, says a fun night out on the town with his friends turned into horror on the 4 train on his way home around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

When the train stopped at Spring Street, another man boarded, and as the doors closed, Adorno said, the man grabbed a plastic baseball bat from Adorno’s backpack and began hitting him in the face.

“He just started trying… I’m here blocking, doing my best and covering my hands and face,” he said.

Although the suspect demanded his belongings, Adorno managed to escape when the train doors opened at the Bleecker Street station.

“I had blood stains all over the side of my face. My jacket was covered in blood,” he said.

He ran out of the station and made it a few blocks to Prince Street and Greene Street, where a patrol car happened to be stationed.

The victim suffered a broken nose and had to receive dozens of stitches after the subway attack

Adorno was transported to a nearby hospital. He was left with bruises and swelling on his head, a broken nose and dozens of stitches all over his face.

“Four different sets of dissolvable sutures… Eight here, nine there, I have ten more here,” Adorno said.

Despite everything that has happened, Adorno says he is happy to be alive.

“I didn’t suffer a brain hemorrhage, so I’m just happy about that. I just feel like I have an angel by my side,” he said.

Now that Adorno can finally open his right eye, the internal swelling has gone down, he says. Doctors expect he will make a full recovery.

So far there have been no arrests.

Despite this brazen attack, NYPD data shows that crime on public transit is down 6% compared to this time last year.
