Fort Worth officer will not face criminal charges in fatal police chase

TARRANT COUNTY – A Fort Worth police officer who collided with an innocent driver during a high-speed chase in July 2023 will not be prosecuted, a Tarrant County grand jury decided. The officer was pursuing a stolen car in South Fort Worth when he collided with 57-year-old Andre Craig, who died in the crash.

Craig’s family expressed disappointment in the grand jury’s decision.

“I think my first reaction is just disappointment – ​​but also no surprise. In a way, I’ve become numb to the indifference,” said Craig’s sister, Nefertari Mundy.

Craig, who witnesses said had the green light, was running an errand when it arrived at the intersection of Rosedale St. and Evans Ave. the collision occurred. According to police records, the chase reached Evans Ave. a speed of 100 miles per hour. The posted speed limit in the area is 30 miles per hour.

For more than a year, Craig’s family has sought answers from the Fort Worth Police Department about whether the officer followed the department’s pursuit guidelines and whether he will be held accountable. A police spokesman said the officer, a 20-year veteran, had returned to normal duty while the internal investigation continued. The department has not provided a timeline for completing its internal investigation.

Meanwhile, the man being pursued, Brian Hunter, faces two felony charges: driving a stolen vehicle and evading arrest resulting in death, which can carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

Shortly after the crash, the city of Fort Worth sued the Texas attorney general because the CBS News Texas I-Team and other local media outlets filed a public records request to prevent the release of the full police pursuit policy. The lawsuit is still pending and there has been no movement since March.

“We don’t feel like we’re any closer to completion,” Mundy added. “It feels like the things that happened were just for show. And no real progress has been made.”
