WINONA, Minn — Police in southwestern Minnesota are investigating after a man was seriously injured in a shooting Thursday morning.

According to Winona police, officers responded to a report of a gunshot in the 300 block of West 10th Street around 4:22 a.m

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The man, identified as a 35-year-old from Winona, was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition as of Thursday evening.

According to police, officers spoke with several witnesses who told them that the suspect and victim were involved in a verbal altercation before the shooting.

Officers arrested a 27-year-old Winona man on first-degree assault charges in connection with the shooting.

During a search of the crime scene, police said they found a black handgun that was believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.

The police do not believe there is any danger to the public.
