Yellow Point Drama Group Promises Lots of Laughs with “Calendar Girls”

Yellow Point Drama Group presents a comedy based on a true story about a group of women whose fundraising efforts become an international media sensation.

Calendar Girls will be performed at Cedar Community Hall from Friday, October 18th to November 3rd.

The play revolves around Annie and Chris, along with a cast of 12 other characters. After Annie’s husband dies of cancer, the two best friends decide to do something with their grief.

“When they convince four members of the Women’s Institute Association to pose nude for an alternative calendar, a plan to purchase a new sofa for the local hospital becomes an international media sensation,” says a press release from the theater group.

“The play is very funny,” said director Armando Dos Santos. “In the end, this project somehow unites them and there’s a lot of laughter – some tender moments and it’s a feel-good piece. It’s actually a lot of fun to put together too. It’s a challenge because the cast consists of 14 people, 10 women and four men.”

Dos Santos said it is a high-energy, fast-paced piece full of props and costume changes, which combined with the large cast make it a challenge for the theater company.

“It’s a good story and I like working with a lot of people. I’ve worked with maybe seven, eight, at most nine people in a cast. “It’s a lot more,” said Dos Santos. “It’s a feel-good story, a human story of a group of women who become friends, in a sense, by actually getting naked for a calendar for charity.”

The play was written by Tim Firth, based on the Miramax film’s script by him and Juliette Towhidi.

Calendar Girls opens Friday, October 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cedar Community Hall. There will be seven performances between opening night and November 3rd. Tickets are $35. For more information, visit www.yellowpointdramagroup.org.
