Liberal teen dies in Highway 54 crash

A fatal accident occurred at US Highway 54 and County Road 17 around 3:50 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

A 1993 Chevy 1500 driven by a 15-year-old female from Liberal (name withheld by KSCB) was stopped at the stop sign on County Road 17 at the intersection. Unable to yield, the driver of the Chevy turned west onto U.S. 54, passing in front of a 2025 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by James Campbell Bailey, 60, of Wichita. The Kenworth collided with the Chevy at the intersection. Both vehicles came to a stop partially on the road in the north ditch. The Kenworths unit and trailer came to rest on their side.

The teenager died at the scene. Bailey was not injured. Seat belts were in use in both vehicles.
