Person taken into custody after police shooting

LEHI — A police source told KSL TV that police shot one person and he was taken into custody and taken to a hospital after a traffic stop and foot pursuit Thursday.

The confrontation began, police said, after officers stopped a black Mercedes. Police said the driver did not cooperate and gave false information. Officers learned that the man who was stopped had previously been involved in serious crimes and was considered armed and dangerous. When two officers tried to free the man from the Mercedes, shots were fired and the man was injured.

After the shooting, a brief chase ensued when the driver exited his car and ran into a neighborhood. Police worked to contain the neighborhood and a Department of Public Safety helicopter helped arrest the man.

Police present at the incident said the suspect was injured but gave no further details, while KSL TV’s police source said officers shot the person.

Neighbors told KSL TV that a man with a gunshot wound in the back tried to enter a home but was unable to get in and left the house. This information has not been confirmed by the police.

The person was captured near Harvest Hill Boulevard and Providence Drive in Saratoga Springs. Several police authorities were searching for the person. Police have not indicated that officers are still looking for anyone else.
