Cripple Creek honors the man who died in the Mollie Kathleen Mine accident

CRIPPLE CREEK – The main road through Cripple Creek was closed Thursday morning for a procession honoring the man who died in an accident at the Mollie Kathleen Mine tourist attraction over the weekend.

“The community was the only thing that made it a little easier,” said Patrick Weier’s brother, John Weier.

Patrick Weier was working in the mine when the accident occurred.

Cripple Creek and Victor city leaders, veterans, and family and friends marched in a procession from one side of Cripple Creek to the city park on the other side to show their unity.

At the celebration of life following the procession, there were some laughs as well as tears.

One speaker after another spoke about Weier’s priorities: community, friends and family.

*It’s like losing ten family members, not one. And everyone who knows Patty knows he was just that guy,” John Weier said

Patrick Weir was recognized for his military service and his current continuing community service training with the Victor Fire Department.

Friends also talked about his love of sports, particularly the Chicago Bears and Cubs.

A friend who wore a Bears hat to the memorial said, “I had a Bears hat on, see that guy walking around the corner. I look at him. The first thing he said to me was, “I can tell you and I’ll be friends.”

Family and friends and a fundraiser for the seven-year-old son Weier leaves behind.
