Man seriously injured in golf club attack in Palo Alto; 1 arrested

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — A Menlo Park man is facing attempted murder charges after police say he attacked a man with a golf club in Palo Alto, causing serious head injuries.

According to police, on Monday a woman called 911 and told dispatchers that her boyfriend had just been attacked on a creek bank on East Bayshore Road. When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim with serious injuries. Palo Alto Fire Department paramedics quickly transported the man to a local hospital and he is expected to survive.

Police said an investigation revealed the woman and her boyfriend were on the shore when they were confronted by an acquaintance with a golf club. The woman told investigators that an argument broke out between the two men, which resulted in the suspect hitting her boyfriend in the head with the golf club and threatening to kill him.

According to investigators, the suspect grabbed a kitchen knife and continued to make threats before leaving the area on his bicycle.

Police identified the suspect Wednesday as Franco Serapio, 48, of Menlo Park. Investigators obtained an arrest warrant on suspicion of attempted murder, criminal threats and panhandling. Investigators said Serapio turned himself in to police in East Palo Alto, who turned him over to officers in Palo Alto.
