Convicted felon arrested after shooting in Waterbury

WATERBURY, CT (WFSB) – A convicted felon was arrested following a shooting incident in Waterbury early Thursday morning.

According to police, units responded around 2 a.m. to reports of shots fired in the area of ​​1211 Baldwin Street.

Evidence of gunshots was discovered at the scene. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Devon Abney, was near the area and attempted to flee before being taken into custody.

An investigation revealed he was involved in an argument outside the apartment that resulted in him firing his weapon. One of the bullets hit an occupied bedroom window in the apartment building.

No injuries were reported.

It was also revealed that Abney is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition due to previous convictions, which include firearms and narcotics-related offenses.

He is charged with illegal discharge of a firearm, two counts of risk of injury to a child, criminal coercion in the second degree, obstructing an officer, breach of peace in the second degree, criminal possession of a pistol/revolver and reckless endangerment in the first degree.

He is being held on a $750,000 bond.

Devon Abney, a convicted felon, poses a serious threat to public safety by committing another crime while in possession of a loaded firearm. His reckless actions put our community at risk and I commend our officers for preventing further harm,” said Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo.
