Man charged in Jefferson Street mass shooting faces federal weapons charges

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Department of Justice has filed federal charges against 24-year-old Marquez Davis for his alleged role in the mass shooting on Jefferson Street over the weekend.

Davis was charged with being a convicted felon and possessing a firearm.

According to the criminal complaint against him, Metro Nashville Police Department officers searched for Davis on Oct. 14 to arrest him in connection with the shooting on Jefferson Street during Tennessee State University’s homecoming celebration on Oct. 12.

Davis was arrested at a home in North Nashville.

“Law enforcement aerial surveillance footage showed an individual, later identified as Davis, exiting the roof of the residence, climbing to an adjacent roof and discarding a firearm,” the DOJ said. “Officers recovered an FAI-15 caliber multi-pistol from Franklin Armory Inc. near where Davis had placed it on the roof.”

He has prior convictions for robbery, possession of a controlled substance for resale and possession of a handgun.

“Everyone in our community must be able to come together and celebrate together without fear of random gun violence,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Jaworski. “Our office will do everything necessary to prevent firearms from ending up in the hands of criminals who have the potential to use these firearms to cause greater harm to our citizens.” Jaworski added, “Our firm commitment is our continued partnership with Chief Drake and the MNPD to hold offenders accountable, reduce gun violence, and ensure safer communities for all.”

If convicted, Davis faces up to 15 years in prison.
