October 18, 2024 – (Seoul) A South Korean man in his 30s surnamed Kim was arrested after he allegedly attacked a drunk woman during the live broadcast of the crime. The incident sparked significant outrage, not only because of the attack, but also because it was witnessed by over 200 people who failed to alert authorities.

According to South Korean media reports, Kim targeted a woman who had consumed significant amounts of alcohol. He is accused of feeding her sleeping pills, waiting for her to pass out and then sexually abusing her. The crime was meanwhile broadcast live on the Internet.

This horrific scenario unfolded without spectator intervention and raises critical questions about the responsibility of bystanders in the digital age. The victim was unaware of the assault until she came across the video, which led to her immediate contact with police.

The victim expressed her dismay and horror, wondering how hundreds could watch her suffer and do nothing. “I really don’t remember anything,” she said, fearing further trauma from the possible spread of the video online and lamenting the inaction of those who witnessed the crime live.

Kim, the defendant, denies the allegations and claims that the sexual activities and livestream were consensual. He is currently in police custody and is facing charges of rape and forcible indecency. This case also brought to light allegations that Kim may have committed similar crimes before.
