“Steelers have a bit of a car crash quality to them right now,” Mark Schlereth said

Typically, the Pittsburgh Steelers don’t make drastic changes when things are going well. Even when things go badly, they tend to weather the storm. Take a look at Matt Canada or Kenny Pickett. However, at 4-2, it looks like they will bench Justin Fields. The decision seems odd considering Fields wasn’t the offense’s biggest problem. Former NFL offensive lineman Mark Schlereth believes this decision creates chaos for the Steelers.

“What Pittsburgh is doing right now has the quality of a car crash,” Schlereth said Thursday on FS1’s breakfast ball. “I’ll have to rack my brain to see exactly what happens with this quarterback situation.”

That’s certainly an interesting way to describe the Steelers’ quarterback situation. It is still difficult to dispute or support this opinion. It doesn’t look good for the Steelers to change their quarterback when they were winning games. However, when you consider that Russell Wilson was always listed as the starter, it makes more sense.

Fields won’t be benched because he played poorly. This is happening because the Steelers have committed to Wilson as their starter and they still feel like he gives them the best chance to win. Their offense still hasn’t been good enough this year. They want to see if Wilson can change that. It’s not the worst reason in the world.

In the same paragraph, Schlereth further explained why he has a problem with what the Steelers are doing.

“The [Wilson] This is interesting to me because you are 4-2. Don’t create your own quarterback controversy. And they did it,” he said. “They created their own quarterback controversy.”

It’s not fair to say the Steelers caused this quarterback controversy, but they certainly didn’t help resolve it. Wilson, sidelined with an injury after being named the starter, was always a source of excitement. Now that Fields has looked serviceable, the noise has only gotten louder.

However, the Steelers could have dispelled some of that talk this week by officially naming a starter. Instead, Mike Tomlin has kept a low profile. Instead of committing to Wilson because he deserved the job in the first place, Tomlin left the door open for Fields. It’s obvious he wants to give the New York Jets something to think about this week, but in the long run it may not have been the best decision.

Schlereth is right that it’s difficult to take your eyes off the Steelers right now. They’ll also be playing in prime time this week, so all eyes will be on them. Whether they look ugly or pretty, people will talk. The Steelers, however, only care about winning. If they can do that with Wilson in the middle, there shouldn’t be any problems. Only when they start losing will some problems arise.
