Kate Baldwin and Christopher Innvar will direct The dead1904 Off Broadway

Estelle Parsons and Mary Beth Peil will also join the cast of Irish Repertory Theater’s immersive production.

Off-Broadway’s Irish Repertory Theater and Dot Dot Productions, in association with the American Irish Historical Society, will present the return of The Dead, 1904an immersive adaptation of James Joyce The dead by Pulitzer Prize-winning Irish poet Paul Muldoon and writer Jean Hanff Korelitz.

Led by Irish Rep co-founder Ciarán O’Reilly, previews begin November 20 at the American Irish Historical Society. The opening evening is planned for November 26th, the opening is limited and lasts until January 5th, 2025.

As previously reported, the cast will include Oscar winner Estelle Parsons and Obie winner and Tony nominee Mary Beth Peil as Kate Morkan and Julia Morkan, respectively.

Newly announced for the production are Tony nominee Kate Baldwin (Hello, Dolly!) and Christopher Innvar (To kill a mockingbird), who will lead the company as Greta and Gabriel Conroy, accompanied by violinist/fiddler Heather Bixler as Miss Daly, Terry Donnelly (Philadelphia, here I come!) as Mrs. Malins, Karen Killeen (One night in Dublin) as Mary Jane, Michael Kuhn (Sweeney Todd) as Bartell D’Arcy, Aedin Moloney (Yes! Reflections by Molly Bloom) as Molly Ivors, Michael Mellamphy (The smuggler) as Mr. Browne, Jodie Sweeney as Lily and Gary Troy (The Irish… and how they got there) as Freddy Malins.

The play follows a holiday gathering on January 6, 1904, Epiphany, at the Dublin home of two older sisters, Kate and Julia Morkan, and their niece, Mary Jane. At the party are students, friends, a celebrated tenor, a lost alcoholic and the couple Gabriel and Gretta Conroy. Over the course of an evening there are conversations, music, dancing, food, speeches and disagreements.

The Dead, 1904 There will also be choreography by Barry McNabb, costume design by Leon Dobkowski, lighting design by Michael Gottlieb, sound design by M. Florian Staab and object design by Deirdre Brennan.

Michael Palmer is the production manager, Jade Doina is the assistant stage manager, Mark Hartman is the musical advisor and Maxwell Paris is the wardrobe manager. The cast is by Geoff Josselson.

The Dead, 1904– previously performed during the 2016-2018 holidays – is performed to an audience of 48 people per evening at the American Irish Historical Society and runs across three floors of the building, which has been restored with contemporary decoration. A holiday meal created by Great Performances will also be served.
