“My days are no longer normal”

Bronny James opens up about his recent health scare in a new interview. Featured on the cover of Men’s Health Magazine, the NBA rookie talks about his budding basketball career and how it has impacted his game.

“I got my routine back under control to get back to where I was,” the 19-year-old explained. “I had to do breathing exercises and stuff. It was a total reset. I have to keep track of my heart medications and I got my heart pillow.”

He continued, “My days aren’t normal anymore,” adding, “I still feel like I’m coming back, I’m getting back to where I was.”

In July 2023, James suffered cardiac arrest during a workout at the University of Southern California. Then he was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

“It is an anatomically and functionally significant congenital heart defect that can and will be treated,” it said in a statement at the time. “We are very confident that Bronny will soon make a full recovery and return to basketball. We will continue to keep the media updated and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.”

Still, the health issue hasn’t hampered Bronny’s career as he made history when the Los Angeles Lakers selected him with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. He and LeBron James will be the first father-son duo to play for the same NBA team at the same time.

“Everything I’ve been through over the years has prepared me for this,” Bronny explained Men’s Health.

“I really think it just has to do with experiencing so much negativity and persevering through it all. I feel like it’s gotten me to the point where, whatever situation is holding me back or that I’m not fighting through, I can maintain my well-being and my belief in myself to keep going.”
