Top candidates for dramas or musicals/comedies

Filmmakers and distributors of awards contenders have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification it deems grossly inaccurate.

Some of this year’s cases are undeniable – Netflix’s, for example Emilia Perezin which the characters spontaneously break into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy) and that of A24 The brutalistin which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. However, there are also many close decisions about which many assumptions have been made, but which in most cases have not been confirmed.

The Hollywood Reporter has processed the phones and can now report which direction almost every participant is breaking. Of course, this information is subject to change before November 4th and may be rescinded by the Globes thereafter – but it is current as of this writing.

accession Emilia Perez In the musical/comedy space, there will be several more musicals, including Universal’s Evil; Warner’s Joker: Folie à Deux; Sony Classics’ kneecap; Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King; and Paramounts Better man And Mean Girls. But THR can confirm that some pretty dark films are also submitted there, especially Neons Anorathe story of a sex worker who gets involved with shady Russians; Searchlight A real painabout cousins visiting Poland to pay tribute to their late grandmother; A24 Another manthe story of a man with neurofibromatosis who undergoes surgery to reverse it, and Heretica horror film in which a home visit by Mormon missionaries goes wrong; and, as Gold Derby already reported and some will likely object to Amazon/MGM challengerin which young tennis players find themselves in a love triangle.

Also in the musical/comedy sector: dramas (Netflix). killer; Searchlight Night slut And Types of kindness; Focus’ Didi And piece by piece; Magnolias Thelma; Sony’s Saturday evening And Fly me to the moon); wider comedies (Disney’s Deadpool and Wolverine; Universals The Guy case And Argylle; Warner’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice; Amazon/MGMs My old ass; Apples Wolves; and Sony Classics’ Nasty little letters); and, as made possible by a rule change in 2021, animated features (Universal’s The wild robot; Disney/Pixar Inside Out 2; Disney’s Moana 2; and focus’ piece by piece).

Among the films that perhaps could have been pushed for musical/comedy classification but are submitted as drama instead is Briarcliff/Rich Spirit The apprenticewhich is essentially a buddy film Donald Trump And Roy Cohn; A24 Strangea trippy film about the colorful escapades of one William S. Burroughs deputy; and Sony Classics’ Daddioin which a taxi driver (Sean Penn) and passenger (Dakota Johnson) joke during a long drive.

There are a number of films this year that contain a lot of music but do not enter the musical/comedy race – a confirmation that these are indeed dramas with music: Searchlight’s Bob Dylan portrait A complete unknown; Netflixs Maria Callas biography Mary (meaning his leading actress, Angelina Joliedoesn’t have to compete against the streamer Emilia Perez leading actress, Karla Sofia Gascon); Focus’ Amy Winehouse biography Back to black; and Paramounts Bob Marley biography Bob Marley: One Love.

In another era of the Globes, some films of this type were able to sneak past the guards and land in the musical/comedy category, which was usually thinner – for example A complete unknown director James Mangoldis 2005 Johnny Cash And June Carter Cash biography Walk along the line. But these days, the revamped organization behind the Globes won’t allow anything like that. Films in which characters play musicians performing songs are almost always classified as dramas, whether they like it or not, as opposed to films in which characters spontaneously break into songs (see 2018). Bohemian Rhapsody And A star is born).

Of course, the drama section always included “Focus”. conclave, Nosferatu And The Bike Riders; Paramounts Gladiator II And September 5th; Sony Classics’ The room next door, I’m still here And The outrun; Apples flash; Warner’s Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 And Juror #2; A24 Baby girl, Civil War, Singing Singing, Baby girl And We live in time; Amazon/MGMs Nickel Boys, The fire within And Unstoppable; Netflixs The piano lesson, His three daughters And Shirley; Disney’s Young woman and the sea; vertical The Order; Sideshow/Janus’ Everything we imagine as light; Cinema Lorbers Oh, Canada; Neons The seed of the holy fig And Long legs; roadside The Last Showgirl; Roadside/Vertical lee; shouting The dead don’t hurt; Fall forward Day of the fight; Bleecker St Hard truths; Lionsgate Little things like this And White bird; and Sonys Here.

There is actually only one wildcard: MUBI’s The substanceby Demi Moore plays an aging movie star who takes extreme measures to stay viable in the industry. I can see arguments for this on both sides, and that apparently also applies to MUBI and Moore’s team, who are still figuring out what to do. On the one hand, you could argue that it is a very dark horror film drama. On the other hand, it could certainly be described as satire, elevating a business in which youth and beauty come first. For me it is a modern day Sunset Blvd. (1950), which exploded both of those descriptions – and ended up competing as a drama at the Globes, taking home four awards, including best actress.
