Passenger killed in head-on crash on Route 23 is identified

Authorities have identified the person killed in a head-on crash on Route 23 Tuesday night as a 55-year-old Paterson man.

Hamid Shabuddin was a passenger in a car that was involved in a crash that occurred on the North Side in Riverdale near the Interstate 287 exits around 11 p.m., the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The driver of the car and a pickup truck were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office said on Thursday that she had no information about how the crash occurred and that it was still being investigated. No charges had been filed as of Thursday morning, she said.

According to an online fundraiser, Shabuddin leaves behind a wife and teenage daughter. He recently emigrated to the United States from South Africa and was in a carpool on his way to work.
