A wrong-way crash on I-15 killed two people and closed northbound lanes near Cove Fort

A crash that closed northbound I-15 near the I-70 interchange in Millard County for most of the morning has authorities confirmed it was a fatal wrong-way crash.

According to Utah Highway Patrol Agent Tara Stump, a wrong-way driver on northbound I-15 early Thursday morning left two people dead and two others sustained serious injuries.

The accident was first reported at 5:21 a.m., just a few miles up the highway after a tractor-trailer accident Wednesday morning that also closed the northbound lanes.

Drivers were rerouted to Highway 89 and then I-70 to avoid Thursday’s fatal crash.

Stump said a “hard closure” will be in effect until noon.

Details of the crash were not initially disclosed.

Some of the unanswered questions include how many vehicles were involved, whether there were other drivers or passengers who suffered minor injuries, whether investigators suspected any type of impairment, where the wrong-way vehicle is believed to have entered the highway and what identifying information whether the authorities have issued or plan to issue citations or arrests.

As of 10 a.m. Thursday, Stump reported that there had been 46 accidents statewide.
