Patois Consultant – “Marge Attack”

Patois Consultant – “Marge Attack”

by Dan Goldin (@post_trash_)

I’m from Charlotte, North Carolina, Patois consultant have been doing their thing for almost a decade, expanding their collective mentality, creating down-to-earth post-punk and constantly exceeding expectations. There’s a lot going on in their sonic blueprint, as the seven-piece band constructs multi-layered arrangements that tread the line between lush wear and fuzzy impotence. It’s a magic trick that balances sounds and nuances the way they do, captured to great effect on their upcoming third album. Limited areawill be released on October 24th Ever/Never Records (Workers’ competition rider/horse, Stylianos Ou). With gentle melodies and concentrated lyrical lightness, Bo White and Co. make the habitable sound hospitable. Similar to Protomartyr or The Bad Seeds before them, Patois Counselors live in the middle of the calm and the immediate, Limited area as beautiful as it is disarming.

After recently sharing shuffling lead single “Fit Habit” alongside the announcement of the upcoming album, Patois Counselors return with “Marge Attack,” a retro-futuristic post-punk song full of jazzy lounge charm and a brilliantly laid-back rhythm , into a deep groove back section that shines in its elastic pocket. As the band ripples like pebbles skipped across a glassy lake, the tension warps with the density, picking up one moment and dissolving in the next, moving in unexpected swirls that pulsate with a magnificent attention to detail. Everything is in its place, but that doesn’t stop the band from giving the whole thing a run-down vibe. Patois Counselors reward careful listening, and “Marge Attack” is a reminder that they’re at their best when everything seems like it could fall apart at any moment.
