Weeks before Election Day, Fani Willis is trying to reopen criminal charges against Trump

The possibility of Donald Trump being elected president has not yet stopped Fani Willis from her attempt to hold him accountable for his alleged crimes during the 2020 election.

On October 16, the Fulton County district attorney asked the Georgia Court of Appeals to reinstate six criminal charges against Trump and five more of his co-defendants.

Willis wants to overturn a March ruling by Judge Scott McAfee that Trump and his co-defendants were not provided with enough details about certain charges to provide a proper defense.

The six counts that were dismissed revolve around the alleged act that Trump and his cohorts pressured others to violate their oaths of office, but the indictment should include more details about the actual office that was violated, McAfee said March.

In the letter issued this week, Willis wrote that she “mOre (Trump and his five co-defendants) were sufficiently informed of the conduct in question and were able to prepare an intelligent defense against the allegations. The indictment contained a wealth of contextual and factual allegations regarding the requests in question, including when the requests were made, to whom the requests were directed, and the manner in which the requests were made.”

Willis’ initial indictment included 41 counts (13 felonies) against Trump and his co-defendants. Trump now faces 32 charges, including eight felonies.

The RICO case centers on the 2020 election investigation when Trump asked former Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in a phone call to help him get over 11,000 votes, putting him behind Joe Biden in Georgia.

During a recorded call that took place on January 2, 2021, Trump told Raffensperger, “All I want to do is this.” I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won state.”

Trump’s legal troubles have not yet deterred his loyal supporters and some Republicans who are supporting him in his bid to become the next US president.

Since leaving the White House in 2020, Trump has been accused by the FBI of inciting the January 6 insurrection; charged with election interference in Georgia; and convicted of 34 felonies in New York for conspiring to pay hush money to a porn star.
