Sex offender was released on probation

A Kamloops man sent to federal prison for a series of “predatory” sex crimes against his stepdaughter and two young nieces has been granted day parole.

The 45-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison in June 2023 for three counts of sexual harassment of a person under the age of 16. He cannot be named due to a court-ordered publication ban issued to protect the identity of the victim.

The court heard the offenses described as sexual touching occurred between 2012 and 2016 in Kamloops. The incidents were reported to social workers in 2020 and the man was charged in 2022.

The sentencing judge described the man’s actions as “predatory.”

“These are egregious crimes against young girls,” Kamloops Provincial Court Judge Stella Frame said during the sentencing.

“[He] was in a position of trust and completely violated that trust.”

The man took responsibility for his actions and participated in reconciliation efforts, including healing circles, before he was sent to prison.

He requested full probation and day parole. In a decision Wednesday, the Parole Board of Canada rejected his request for full parole but granted him day parole.

“The Board believes that you must demonstrate your ability to adhere to the conditions in the community and this can best be achieved through the supervision, structure and support provided by the initial residence in one [half-way house] on probation a day,” the decision said.

The man was eligible for day parole in August and will be eligible for full parole in February.
