Penn State sees increase in hazing reports

In a statement sent to parents and families, Penn State said there was an increase in harassment reports during the 2024-25 school year. The statement was signed by Darcy Rameker, associate vice president for Student Affairs, Megan Pepper, director of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, and Katy Larkin, director of the Office of Student Responsibility and Conflict Response.

The university wrote that reports of hazing had more than doubled compared to this time last year. Penn State said it was taking “all available measures” to address the issue.

“We strongly encourage you to speak with your student about the dangers and effects of hazing and the importance of reporting harmful behavior,” Penn State told parents and families. “Open conversations can help prevent these incidents and ensure their safety.”

Penn State said it had received several reports of “multiple reports of hazing and risky drinking behavior” at Phi Kappa Sigma and Sigma Chi, two unrecognized fraternities. Although the fraternities are not under Penn State University’s jurisdiction, the university said it is working with local law enforcement to address the issues.

“Our staff quickly and thoroughly investigate reports of hazing to address concerns as quickly as possible, including working with local law enforcement,” the university wrote. “Students are reminded of important training available to them and often complete prevention courses as part of their involvement in student organizations.

“Solving this increase in victimization behavior is a priority and your partnership in this effort is critical.”

Penn State will offer several events for those participating or interested in Greek life Parents and family weekend.
