Family mourns two victims of fatal car accident

FANNIN COUNTY, Texas (KXII) – Five people died in a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 121 Monday. The victim’s family said the pain was unbearable.

Five people died in a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 121 when a car attempted to pass in a no-passing zone, resulting in a fiery head-on collision.

“The officer says there was a big accident, a bad accident and I was in shock and I just think you need to run and see if that’s your sister and grandma and that’s what I did,” Cristhian Rodriguez said .

As local officials push for safer streets, the family is arranging the funeral of 20-year-old Danielha Rodriguez and 64-year-old Maria del Carmen Santiz.

“Our lives have changed…this is real. I wish I could tell you that we are living in a nightmare and we wake up and say everything is fine and nothing happened…” said Erwin Aju, Danielha’s stepfather and Maria’s son-in-law.

Rita Maria Lopez is Danielha’s mother and Maria’s daughter. She knew the two were driving from Wylie to Broken Bow, Oklahoma, on Monday afternoon and tracked their location through an app on her phone.

When the needle stopped moving and she heard nothing from them, the family got in the car and drove to where it had stopped. The closer we got, the more I saw this red line, but I said, “No, I hope that’s not the case,” but when I saw a sign that said “Bridge Closed,” I started to worry and said, “Oh no, no, no, I hope that’s not the case,” Aju said.

A family’s worst nightmare. “My heart broke in that moment,” Cristhian said. Danielha leaves behind an 11-month-old daughter.

The family plans to bury her in Guatemala and has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses.
