Menlo Park man arrested in connection with golf club attack

PALO ALTO – Police arrested a 48-year-old Menlo Park resident Wednesday on suspicion of attacking and injuring a man with a golf club in Palo Alto earlier this week.

The incident occurred at 3:45 p.m. Monday at a creek dam adjacent to the 2000 block of East Bayshore Road, Palo Alto police said in a statement.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a “severe head injury,” according to police. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

An investigation revealed that the victim was on the bank of the stream with his girlfriend when they were confronted by an acquaintance with a golf club. The suspect and victim got into an argument during which the suspect threatened to kill the victim and hit him in the head with the golf club, police said.

According to police, the suspect then grabbed a nearby kitchen knife and threatened to kill the victim again. When the victim’s girlfriend intervened, the suspect rode away on his bicycle.

Investigators identified the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest on charges of attempted murder and criminal threats, both felonies, and parading a misdemeanor.

The suspect turned himself in to East Palo Alto police Wednesday morning, police said. He was later booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on the warrant.
