Anitra Holloman’s mother sits exclusively with WBRC as police announce mass shooting arrest

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – How Birmingham police broke the news the mass shooting arrestAnitra Holloman’s mother sat exclusively at WBRC to give her raw, unfiltered reaction while watching the press conference.

“How? And they say there were multiple shooters,” Candace Kemp said as she watched television in her living room.

The mother asked why only one suspected shooter was behind bars.

BPD said more than three weeks ago that it believed several gunmen and three others were involved in the killing of Holloman.

“I was just surprised that they said they only had one person,” Kemp said.

However, she holds on to hope as justice is optimistically unfolding before her eyes.

She told WBRC that her prayers are already being answered.

“I hope. I’m praying,” Kemp shared. “I got down on my knees and prayed the other night, and the detective called me the very next day. I guess I’ll get on my knees again tonight.”

Dozens of families are currently trying to process what happened that night in Five Points South, and others will learn about it in the years to come.

Kemp’s granddaughter, Skiler, is now being raised as one of her own.

“If you look at her, she looks just like her mother,” Kemp said. “She acts like her mother, so it will be a process. The sight of you makes me emotional.”

The mother added that she will keep Holloman’s memory alive for Skiler, especially as the holidays approach.

“Because her mother was the one who organized all the holidays for the family,” she said. “We have to make sure she knows her mother is there every year before the holidays. In my mind I know Anitra will be there.”

After hearing the news, Kemp told WBRC that this was the first day since her daughter’s death that she didn’t wake up and cry. She said she is grateful that BPD is making progress.
