Oklahoma mother reports repeated theft of SNAP benefits

A metro area mother says her SNAP benefits have been stolen not once, but multiple times.

Danielle Sutter is a single mother who relies on food stamps to feed herself and her baby

“One day I went to the grocery store and planned to get us enough groceries for the next two weeks or so,” Sutter said. “It didn’t go through. It said there were zero dollars there, and I knew that was wrong.”

Sutter was the victim of a SNAP benefit theft that also affected 2,600 other households across the country, according to Oklahoma Human Services.

OHS recommends treating your SNAP Benefit card like a debit or credit card. Choose a PIN that is difficult to guess and never give your card to anyone else

Danielle says she has had money stolen from her account seven times.

To protect your benefits, OHS says you can use the Connect EBT app to lock your card between uses.

Oklahoma Human Services is on track to launch chip cards next summer for added protection.

SNAP households have until December 20 to recover stolen benefits.
